When Scan completes checking a volume, it will display a dialog box giving the total number files checked, the total number of sectors read, and the total number of bad files and bad sectors it found. It will also display a rough data throughput figure, which represents the speed of the disk. This figure is obtained by dividing the total data (in thousands of bytes, or KB) by the time required to process the volume, giving the number of KB per second. Since this figure includes directory accesses as well as files transfers, it may be used as a rough measure of the volume speed and fragmentation. If this figure decreases over time, it is likely that severe fragmentation is present on the disk, causing it to run slower. To recover from this, you may wish to completely back up the disk, initialize it, then restore it from the backup. By doing this, fragmentation will be eliminated and the disk will run faster.
